Critical Perspective on Song E Yoon at Biennale Arte 2026

In his essay Archaeology as an Aesthetic and Methodological Model: Contemporary Art in Dialogue with the Past, Materiality and the Public, Norwegian art historian, curator, and writer Arnt Fredheim examines Song E Yoon’s Songs Across Time as a case study within the context of the 2026 Venice Biennale.

Fredheim studied art history in Oslo and at the University of Cambridge and has held curatorial and scholarly positions at institutions including the Munch Museum, the National Gallery/National Museum, and Kistefos Museum.

In his essay, Fredheim situates Yoon’s practice at the intersection of archaeology, archive, affect, and system. He highlights Song E Code as a visual language through which experience is transformed into signs and meaning, arguing that Yoon extends the “archival impulse” toward a more fundamental question: how archives and systems of signs themselves emerge.
