Venice Independent Creative & Research Residency 2026
Organized by The Foundation of ART NYC, presenter of an Official Collateral Event of the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia
The Foundation of ART NYC is pleased to announce the Venice Independent Creative & Research Residency 2026, an international residency program designed to support artists, curators, writers, researchers, and cultural practitioners seeking dedicated time and space to develop independent creative or research projects in Venice.
Held during the 61st International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, the residency offers participants the opportunity to live and work in the historic center of Venice while engaging with one of the world’s most significant international contemporary art events.
Unlike traditional residency programs centered on communal living or structured activities, this program is designed as a fully independent (self-directed) residency. Each residency session accommodates one resident only, providing exclusive use of the accommodation throughout the residency period and an environment that encourages focused research, writing, reading, drawing, digital work, and other table-based creative practices.
The residence is located on the main island of Venice, within walking distance of the Rialto Bridge, offering convenient access to museums, galleries, libraries, archives, artist-run spaces, and the Biennale venues at the Giardini and Arsenale.

Eligibility
This is an International Open Call.
Applications are welcome from individuals engaged in artistic practice or research, including but not limited to:

- Cultural Practitioners
Applicants of all nationalities, countries of residence, ages, genders, and races are encouraged to apply.
The Foundation of ART NYC values diversity and inclusivity. All applications will be reviewed fairly and equally based on the quality of the proposed project and its relevance to the residency.
Residency Includes
Each selected resident will receive:

The residency is intended for independent creative and research-based practices such as writing, reading, drawing, digital work, and other table-based projects.
Please note that the space is not suitable for sculpture fabrication, large-scale painting, installation production, or other heavy studio activities.

Applicants must submit the following materials in one PDF file:

- Portfolio (maximum 20 pages)
- Project Proposal (maximum 1,000 words)

- Working plan during the residency
- Expected outcomes
Selection Criteria
Applications will be evaluated based on:
- Artistic or academic quality
- Originality of the proposed project
- Feasibility within the residency period
- Relevance to the residency program
- Applicant’s professional background and future potential
All applications will be reviewed by the Board of Directors of The Foundation of ART NYC.

Selected applicants must confirm their participation and complete the residency fee payment within 48 hours of notification.
If confirmation or payment is not received within the specified period, the offer may be withdrawn and extended to an alternate applicant.

Residency Experience
The Venice Independent Creative & Research Residency is designed to provide uninterrupted time and space for focused creative practice and research.
Residents are free to organize their own schedules and make use of Venice’s exceptional cultural resources, including museums, galleries, libraries, archives, and the Biennale venues.
Following the residency, participants may be considered for future exhibitions, research initiatives, publications, residency programs, or collaborative projects organized by The Foundation of ART NYC. Participation in the residency does not guarantee future opportunities.
Important Information
- This is a self-directed residency.
- No workshops, public programs, or mandatory activities are provided.
- Only one resident will occupy the accommodation during each session.
- The residency fee of €2,000 is non-refundable.
- The Foundation of ART NYC does not provide visa sponsorship, invitation letters for visa applications, or immigration assistance.
- Residents are responsible for obtaining any necessary visas, insurance, travel arrangements, and transportation.
- Airfare, meals, local transportation, Biennale admission tickets, and personal expenses are not included.
- The Foundation of ART NYC reserves the right not to select applicants if no suitable applications are received.
- The Foundation also reserves the right to modify the residency schedule or program if unforeseen circumstances arise.
- Submission of an application constitutes acceptance of all residency policies and conditions.
Notification
Successful applicants will be notified individually by email.
The list of selected residents will also be published on The Foundation of ART NYC website.
Due to the anticipated volume of applications, unsuccessful applicants will not be notified individually.
Applicants who do not receive a notification by the announcement date should consider their application unsuccessful.
