Biennale
Dear Song,
The days I spent in Liverpool were full of inspiration.
The biennial was spread across different parts of the city, with pavilions serving as exhibition spaces and public art along the streets.
Being accustomed to the artists exhibited at the Venice Biennale—who are mostly over 50 and mostly men—I was struck by the very young age and diversity of the Liverpool Biennale’s artists: many were between 20 and 30, and there was a certain parity between the number of male and female artists.
The themes addressed were heterogeneous, ranging from family to the problem of climate change; from the sense of belonging to the critique of heteronormative sexuality.
I've attached some photos. The steel passports are from the work "All in One Boat" by Ugandan artist Odur Ronald, which explores the theme of migration through the experiences of African people.
The photo frames are by Indian artist Nandan Ghiya, who reinterprets ancient Indian tales, using the patterns of historic buildings in Jaipur, to address the problematic issue of racial conflict.
I've thought about you often, I'm sure you would have loved the installations (and exhibition spaces too).
But tell me a little about yourself: how did the exhibition's closing in New York go? What are you working on now?
I'm finishing my latest research paper and will start a new project at the end of September. I'm excited.
Waiting for your news,
I send you a big hug,
